Selecting a Tent
Fortunately, there are all kinds of tents for weekend car campers, Everest expeditions, and everything in-between. Here are a few things to keep in mind: Expect the Worst
In general, it’s wise to choose a tent that’s designed to withstand the worst possible conditions you think you’ll face. For instance, if you’re a summer car camper in a region where weather is predictable, an inexpensive family or all purpose tent will likely do the trick-especially if a vehicle is nearby and you can make a mad dash for safety when bad weather swoops in! If you’re a backpacker, alpine climber or bike explorer, or if you like to car camp in all seasons, you’ll want to take something designed to handle more adversity. Three- and Four-Season Tents
For summer, early fall and late spring outings, choose a three-season tent. At minimum, a quality three season tent will have lightweight aluminum poles, a reinforced floor, durable stitching, and a quality rain-fly. Some three-season tents offer more open-air netting and are more specifically designed for summer backpacking

  • Two-season technical backcountry tent for three people

  • Lightweight and roomy with double doors and two vestibules for gear storage

  • Fly UV resistant ripstop Polyester with 2000mm, UV coating

  • Inner tent includes “no-see-um” mesh panels and windows

ALPS Mountaineering Mystique 8- by 5-Foot Two- to Three-Person Lightweight Backpacking Tent Reviews

Review by H. M. Johnson III:

I am a GEARhead. I own or have owned over 30 tents plus all the fixings… Both backpacking as well as car camping. This tent as far as I know did not exist when I rewalked Colin Fletcher’s 1000 Mile Summer through California. Had it, I would’ve of used the 1.5 model. After getting home and settling in from my walk I ran across both the 1.5 and 2. I own both now and can say they both are killer deals in their price range. And yes I own SD, REI, Kelty, Coleman/Exponent, Moss, Slumberjack Bivy (I used) and on and on and on… I have tried many while hiking in the Olympic Mountains in WA. I would put this model(s) up against any listed. If you have money to burn yes there are some that may be better at lasting a little longer but I question that too… and yes you can go lighter in weight… but by going lighter you’ll give up a lot of comfort and the security you get knowing that you have a shelter that will handle just about anything Mother nature throws at you. Alps other models I’m not sure of size VS. weight and the value VS. dollars. But this model is absolutely great.

Good luck on your hikes,

Hersh

Review by M. Peterson:

I used this tent two weeks ago on a winter camping trip. I was quite impressed with the overall quality for the money. The material feels strong and tear-resistant. The poles are well constructed and lightweight. Set-up is easy, although, because it is a two-pole tent, I had to improvise as I was camping in loose snow and wasn’t able to make the stakes stay to give it structure (ended up using my own tree branch stakes). This would not be an issue in any other season. Regardless, it stayed bone dry in several feet of snow and protected me, a friend, and my dog from some harsh winds. Entry and exit is simple and convenient. Zippers felt of good quality and did not snag. On a final note, the tent was able to easily accommodate me (6’5″, 210lbs), my friend (6’0″, 175 lbs), and my 40lb dog with big winter sleeping bags and some gear inside. Would definitely recommend for this price range!

Three-Person Camping Dome Tent 7 Feet X 7 Feet One Touch Set Up Reviews

Review by Kelly:

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R377Q9C0CCT24 Make sure you spread the tent, then it is easy to pull the strings to open the tent.

Review by ExtraShot:

I have never set up a tent before, so I choose this tent because of the “one touch set up” and the price was right. I watched the helpful video that another reviewer posted. It took me less then ten minutes from taking the tent out of the box, to finish. The quality of the fabric is as expected. Mid-level quality, I’d say, and perfectly acceptable since I’m not a hardcore camper.

As someone else pointed out, it is not fully 7 feet inside. This is no problem for me, though. The only reason I did not give it five stars is because of the lack of clear instructions. If not for the video it would have taken me much longer to set up, and since this is marketed as an easy set up tent I feel there should be more instructions included. I have not tested it in the rain or wind, but will update once I have. For I’m very happy.

Eureka Juno 3 XTA 7.5-Foot by 6.5-Foot Three-Person Rectangular Dome Tent (Amazon Exclusive) Reviews

Review by Mule:

We had been looking for a light-weight backpacking tent with enough room for two. That seems simple enough, unless you’ve actually been inside of some of the “two-person” tents. Some of the expedition tents meet the size requirements, but are too heavy to be considered backpacking tents. We have just used this tent for the first time, and we are so far pleased. Plenty of room inside for two adults with large sleeping mats and sleeping bags, and a bit of gear. A large vesitibule on each side provides plenty of room for packs. I believe this will be a great warm-weather tent, with all of the mesh. The night we used it, it dropped below freezing. We woke to a ceiling (rainfly) covered in ice (on the inside). Didn’t really expect that, with all of the ventilation, but as it was ice, it didn’t drip on us. I’ll chalk this experience up to extreme conditions until we use it in warmer weather. One thing that I don’t like, although thus far it has not been an issue, is a seam running through the middle of the floor. It has been taped and sealed at the factory, but I just don’t like the looks of it. I will seal it again before spring use, and edit this report, as we are sure to end up in a downpour here in south Texas. The tent is in fact lightweight and roomy, and so far, I am pleased. I will amend this report after having enountered weather with it.

Review by D. Rainey:

Just got back from our first trip with this tent, and it performed admirably. Set up was quick and easy, as was take down.

We had high winds and rain, but the tent felt solid and not a single drop of moisture collected or leaked inside. Overall, a great product for the price we paid (bought it on sale).

The 5 of 5 rating indicates that the tent is as described and performs all the functions it claims.

Was very roomy for two, and lightweight for its size (though it might be a tad heavy for extended backpacking treks - still, light enough to hike with for a few miles).

Asolo Gear Ptarmigan 3-Person Backpacking Tent Reviews

Review by Happy camper:

Love this tent for winter camping, we went on a ice fishing weekend and with the temp dipping below 10 deg and the wind this tent held up! Light and easy to put up. Was a great trip and the tent made all the difference.

Review by Ricky C.:

I went on a three day 23 mile hiking trip a few weeks ago, and I decided to buy a tent. It is a very crucial part of the camping experience since it was going to be what kept me, my friend, and our equipment hot or cool/and DRY. After researching various outfitter stores, dicks, sportsman’s warehouse, wal-mart, target, you name it, I couldn’t find a good tent that was comfortable for two people, and fit my budget. They were either too big, too cheaply made OR Too small, very well-built, and too expensive. Im 6ft 175lbs, and the two person tent at the outfitters was more like 3 season one person tent that cost 9.99. So I decided to stop wasting my time and go to Amazon.com. I researched 2 person tents. I ended up choosing this one for several reasons. The fist is the space, It’s a 3-person dome that comfortably houses 2 with plenty of room for spreading out and your gear and sitting upright without smacking your head on the ceiling. It even comes with a nifty gear hammock you can clip to the ceiling. The second is that the orange rain fly, and the tent itself, are designed like a mountaineering tent. It clips in very easily to all six sides of the dome, and resists rain and wind very well. Search for “expedition tent and see how much they are, this will do the same job against wind in rain, but maybe not in the Himalayas. It is 4-season tent, It is heat seamed and has plenty of zip down windows with bug netting. It also has a nice-sized vestibule in the front for storing your gear and muddy boots if it gets rainy. It comes with lightweight aluminum stakes and a set of 4 aluminum poles. 3 for the tent, and 1 for the vestibule. The tent, the stakes, and the poles weigh about 8.5 pounds, which is good for backpacking. The brand Asolo is most commonly recognized as an Italian hiking boot-maker company, but this tent comes from a company with licensing agreement with Asolo, a Canadian tent maker named Asolo adventure gear. This is not an Italian Asolo product per se, but its quality is reflected in the name, which is surprisingly very good. The tent itself is actually made in China. But Bottom line is; This is a 0 sold on amazon for 9. It is 4-season-expedition-style tent, it is spacious, has cool features, and is DRY. Before you go out and spend 0-00 on a north face, MSR, REI, or any of that nonsense, I encourage you to consider this tent, I am extremely pleased with it. My buddy who bought the north face minibus 23, isn’t after he saw my tent.

Kelty Grand Mesa 6-Person Tent (Ruby/Tan) Reviews

Review by D. Williams:

We bought this tent for our family of 5 and it has been great. It has a large vestibule and is very quick and easy to set up. The tent is lightweight and the aluminum poles are light and strong.

Review by N. Rengler:

Nice tent, good quality, easy to set up and actually fits back into its stuff sack. My only gripe is the tent should have stake grommets or loops mid point at the bottom of both sides and perhaps the back (where the side and rear panels are seamed with the floor). With stakes only at each of the four corners, the side and rear panels sag a bit, and the floor is not tight. The easiest way to explain it is: Imagine yourself IN the tent - you can reach down at the seam between the floor and side or rear panels and literally pull the fabric in about a foot. This makes for a non-tight floor. Fortunately, I knew about Sierra tent guyout clips, and with those the tent is close to perfect. Minor gripe, I suppose, but a few pennies for three stake loops (each side and the back) would have been a good design idea.
