Eureka Apex 2XT Adventure 7′ 5″ by 4′ 11″ Two-Person Tent Reviews

Review by AceCadet:

I’ve taken this tent out three times so far. Once “car camping” and two backpacking trips. Two of those trips we had very heavy rains. Both times the tent stayed completely dry. I was very impressed. This is also one of the only two person tents that I’ve camped with that is actually comfortable for two people. The dual vestibules give plenty of gear room. Set up is simple even for one person. It’s a little on the heavy side for backpacking - if that will be your main use I suggest looking at the Pinnacle Pass which is the same tent but with aluminum poles that make it about a pound lighter.

Review by Todd Shillam:

I have taken my Eureka Apex 2XT on numerous car camping trips last year, and it worked great even in the pouring rain in the Cascade Mountains of Washington (and it rains here no doubt). The tent rainfly has a nice PU (Polyurethane) coating on the underside, and a factory DWR (Durable Water Repellant) treatment on the outside surface that beads water very well. The full vestibules on both sides is a must-have feature of this tent-great for storing gear, boots, and even cooking while under protective cover (unzip rainfly a bit before starting a stove). The two large entrance doors on both sides make entry and exit from the tent easy. I also like how this tent breathes very well-very, very little condensation (none if those doors are unzipped and rolled down). I also purchased the optional gear loft, and I found this addition worth the cost. I like how I can toss my wallet, keys, flashlight, and other gear into the tent loft.

The only downsides here are the two side tent doors do not have mesh bug-screens. However I found that with the vestibules fully zipped, those little critters have a tough time finding a way inside. If they do, I just zip the tent doors shut. For backpacking, the weight is a bit on the heavy side. However if you are going on a trek with an adult partner, given them a tent pole and the rainfly, and a ground cloth. Meanwhile, you keep a tent pole, the tent itself, and the stakes-that is just over 2 pounds (nice for the ultralight packer). The tent floor fabric is a light ripstop. Make sure you get a ground cloth. I would not recommend the Eureka ground tarps-too heavy and cheap plastic. I would recommend a cloth emergency all-weather space blanket-it will reflect back heat in colder weather, and its much lighter for about the same price if not less.

Otherwise, I do not think you will find a better tent for the money. I would even go so far as to say this tent is near expedition quality and craftsmanship. In short, you won’t be dissappointed.

Kelty Grand Mesa 2-Person Tent (Ruby/Tan)

In the early 1950′s, Dick Kelty made backpacks for his friends in the Sierra Club. Time and experience proved that hiking was more pleasurable when the hiker could carry heavy loads without shoulder pain. This was accomplished with Kelty’s ideas of a hipbelt and light weight aluminum frames. A few of Kelty’s popular items are backpacks, adjustable poles, rain covers for backpacks, camp pillows, fanny packs, a carport tent or shelter, Thermolite Quallo sleeping bags, and chuckwagon dog packs.Blending affordability with versatility, the Kelty Grand Mesa is a great choice for packing on your trail excursions. This freestanding tent sleeps up to two campers, offers three-season usage, and includes a single vestibule for storage. It also includes large mesh windows for optimal ventilation, full coverage, UV resistant polyester rain fly, and color-coded poles for quick-and-easy setup. Weighing 4 pounds, 2 ounces, the two-person Grand Mesa has a 29 square foot floor area and a 6 square foot vestibule. The aluminum DAC Press Fit poles offer more strength for improved durability and a more wind-resistant pitch. They use a color-coded clip construction that eliminates the hassle of feeding poles through cumbersome tent sleeves-just slide the shock-corded pole sections together and attach the clips. The tent also offers post and grommet type assembly with locking pole tips for convenience and security. The bathtub floor offers wrap-up sides for extreme weather protection, and the main fly and floor seams are factory taped for extreme weather protection. Other features include a single flashlight loop, mesh interior pockets for gear storage, external guy points for added stability in windy conditions, and noiseless zipper pulls. Specifications

Review by Rowe Rowe:

For the price, I figured this was the dirt tent.

I was wrong…When I opened this tent, I water proofed it first thing. Sealed the seams and the fly. Left it outside and of course, we got a healthy DUMPING of rain! It wasn’t intentional but as it turned out, it was the ultimate test. This tent does not have high marks for water resistant but let me tell you that after sealing it, it DOES! Like all other EUREKA tents, this one has the “bathtub” bottom which means they designed it to stay dry by engineering the material to have little seams AT the bottom. Instead they are sewn 3-4 inches above the ground line which creates a lip that keeps the whole bottom dry. You have to step over it to get in but … who cares! Once sealed, this tent hits a home run!

So now the durability test: The kids played in the tent for three days. I have two boys that know how to test stuff, believe me! Little did I know that they were playing ball with the dog and were tossing the ball inside the tent. I was horrified to watch the dog jumping in and out of the tent. Oh, the dog tried to jump through the screen as well! AUUGHH…but the tent not only survived, it came out unscathed. The fabric is VERY tough and took a beating with no scratches!

The tent was easily packed into a hiking backpack and is very lightweight. The room inside is terrific and you CAN share it with two full adults if you HAD to. I don’t recommend it unless you really LIKE that other adult. he he…

Overall, this tent rocks. My only thing is that between the tent price and the shipping, I paid too much for it. :( ()

It was on sale at our local *grocery store* for much less!

*DOH*

So Amazon is great and you get good research but sometimes it doesn’t hurt to look locally once you are finished because the vendors charge WAY to much for shipping and thats disappointing. This does not take away from the tent itself though. This tent is the best backpacking tent I’ve had bar none.

Review by hypercyber:

I was a little disappointed with this tent after I pitched it in my backyard to the seal the seams (manufacturer’s recommendation by the way - and a must). The tent alone is nice. Obviously a 12′ by 10′ footprint is plenty of room. But the fly is poorly designed.

Since there are doors on either side, I thought the fly would cover the rear just like the front (in the picture) but that’s not the case. The brim rods are thin fiberglass poles that fit through sleeves in the fly and they attach to exterior guide holes. But the umbrella fly can only be staked on one side.

I placed stakes where the loops are in between the corners to keep it up for 24 hours and let the seam seal cure. It held up nicely until a 15 mph (or so) breeze came through and turned it upside down the following afternoon. All loops that were staked, except the front two where the fly comes out, came out of the ground. Consequently, the left side of the fly completely ripped. So stake out everything/every time in case Mother Nature decides to sneeze on this tent.

You will definitely need a tarp to place underneath it since the floor is made out of the same nylon taffeta as the walls. And I would replace the yellow plastic stakes with aluminum/steel stakes. The tent may stay put in inclement weather but if it’s really nasty, I suspect some rain will make its way through the mesh ceiling even with the fly on because the front/rear do not come below the ceiling like the sides.

The sewn-in gear loft is on the right and just below the mesh ceiling. It can be attached horizontally to store things just above the walls or it can be attached vertically but that will block the view from that window. It would have been nice if the whole thing was detachable. But it will work if/when needed.

The separate room divider can be attached/removed via dog bones fed through loops. It divides the tent into rooms starting from just above the ground and up to the mesh ceiling. If someone is tall, there goes your privacy.

That being said, I think the tent will be OK. I thought I was lucky when I got this on sale for under 0. But I’m glad that’s all I paid. Fortunately, Eureka sells replacement parts so I ordered another fly for plus shipping.

Update (May 25, 2008): I received the fly replacement and it is a huge improvement over the one that originally came with the tent. The new design does not incorporate the flimsy brim rods. And it arches over on both sides where the doors are located. One caveat: you will need to order the pole that has been incorporated into the new design. Otherwise, it will just hang down and could get snagged by the door’s zipper.

When I went to pitch the tent at the camp site by myself, I noticed the fiberglass poles had stress cracks where the poles connect. So while the tent can be pitched by one person, having another person will help reduce that. I would have given this four stars with the new fly but since that happened, it’s still 3 stars in my mind.

Review by Doug Henry:

I’ve camped & hiked for many years and thought what a great tent for light weather hiking. WOW………The very first day I set it up it fell apart. When I pulled the zipper to open the tent, the entire seem holding the zipper completely unraveled. This has to be the poorest excuse for a tent I’ve ever experianced. I had to click on at least one star or they wouldn’t accept the review.

Dissapointed Doug

Eureka Adventure Apex 2FG 7-Foot by 5-Foot 2-Person Tent Reviews

Review by A. Lauder:

My family has three of these, a great tent. I like that I can set up a low chair and read in my tent comfortably during bad weather. I don’t care for the rain fly “wings” but both my dad and brother don’t mind them and like the space. We all really like the double doors.

Review by Colin J. Fitz-gibbon:

This tent was easy to set up and take down… it’s lightweight and fits back in the packaging after use. I definitely recommend this tent for backpacking but you want to seal the corners as soon as you get it. Nothing like wanting to stay dry and your tent gets a puddle forming in the corner of it…

High Peak Hyper Lite ~ Backpacking Hiking Camp Camping Compact Hyperlite Tent ~ 2 Person Size Reviews

Review by Virginia P:

I bought the tent to use on small trips in the Adirondacks. Considering the price it was a fairly good deal. It is easy to set up and dismantle in just a few minutes. The full rain-fly is nice as well. There are a few problems, however. The tent is rather small for two people with equipment typically carried while backpacking. If you have a large pack, you’ll have to leave it outside- or hope it fits in the vestibule. My boyfriend is a little over 6 feet tall and he had to sleep at a slight diagonal due to the dimensions of the footprint. The vestibules themselves are usefull for leaving small items outside (while still having them protected), like dirty boots. My main concern with this tent are the fiberglass poles. I set the tent up once to see it before using it. I used the tent once after that and the firberglass was actually bending, not just flexing, but creased. The third time I set it up, one section of pole broke. No unecessary force or strain was used that would have caused it to break.

It’s not very compact thought I suppose it could be, but is fairly lightweight. The tent itself is nice and the fly kept moisture out. I would suggest purchasing aluminum poles if possible, as they are sturdier and more lightweight. I give this tent a 3 because it would be great for solo trips, had the poles been a better quality.

Review by V. H. Wagner:

I completely agree with the previous review. It’s a nice little tent if you’re not very tall. Two people can sleep in it but there’s no room for any gear whatsoever, and the fiberglass poles split after only one season of mild use. I have found it very difficult to find poles that will fit this tent in most outfitters and have resorted to purchasing aluminum poles on-line so I can continue using the tent. Given the hassles I’ve had with it, if I had it to do over I’d spend more and buy a tent made by a more well-known manufacturer.

I slept in this tent for several days up in the Appalachian Mountains. It was very comfortable and I had no problems with staying dry either from condensation in the morning or from the one day it rained. It was easy to put together, has nice ventilation options and convenient storage pockets etc. I slept in it by myself and had plenty of room. I think it would be a little crowded with two people, but since there are two doors it would definitely be possible. You wouldn’t have to crawl over you camping buddy to get out and go to the bathroom in the middle of the night.

It is also the perfect backyard tent for family fun before the camping trip. Whether you use it in your backyard or on your next camping trip, the size and weight make it easy and fun to use. 6′ x 5′ x 40″ provides a wedge shaped dome for easy access.Nicely lightweight and easy to set up and breakdown, the sporty Wenzel Nova dome-style tent is a great choice for a weekend car camping outing. It features a single room that measures 6 by 5 feet, and a 38-inch maximum height. It has a half-circle door with a mesh window covering half of it (and an interior zippered closure) as well as a three-quarter vented dome with no-see-um mesh. The interior is quite spare, with only a small gear pocket in one corner near the door. Set up was easy, for the most part, and we erected the tent (with its two shock-corded fiberglass poles) in under five minutes. The one impediment to an even faster assembly was the heavy-duty nylon corner pockets that secure the poles, which included a polyester-reinforced interior flap that’s not seamed at the top of the entry. Thus, we had a tougher time than we should have trying to make correct purchase with the pocket, continually hitting the space between the nylon pocket and the interior poly pocket. But we could forgive this slight design flaw for such a nicely light and easily backpacked tent. However, it should be noted that this tent isn’t suited to an all-out assault by rain, with just a small rain cover (instead of a full fly) to protect the dome’s three-quarter-ventilated square, which is quickly
